Transfer Child Custody Case to Another State

Previously, I was living in Florida. While there I completed my divorce/custody case. I have since moved to Michigan (my ex lives in Michigan as well) and I would like to transfer the case here. How do I do that?

Dear Anonymous,

Under the UCCJEA (Uniform Child Custody and Jurisdiction Enforcement Act), since both parents no longer live in Florida, any one of you can file for a modification of jurisdiction of the original custody order.

If any one of you, as the parents, were still living in Florida, then the Florida court would retain jurisdiction in most circumstances.

After doing a little research, Michigan does provide help for families and child custody issues. Download the Notice of Registration of Out-of-State Child-Custody Determination (UCCJEA) Form, and contact the Michigan Friend of the Court in your county.
